DRAW and TEACH with STICK FIGURES

INTRODUCTION

You don't need to be an artist or an expert in stick figures. Remember that the purpose in using stick figures is to make easier the teaching learning process. You want to motivate students to use and communicate in English. Anyone can draw lines and circles. But you, the instructor, are going to use this ability make your classes more meaningful and productive. And you must remember that students already know to use lines, and circles. Now you and your students will use stick figures objectively. Our ultimate goal is to use English and stick figures are good in accomplishing this task.

OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of this tutorial is to give you the basic tools in creating and using stick-figures in teaching.
To express in a few simple lines ideas and concepts is our main objective. Thus we want to be creative and good observer of human actions.

Objective 1 - Drawing the Stick Figure
We are going to identify the basic structure of the stick figure and the different elements of the face and body. We will include how to give expressions and actions to the stick figure, and personality as well.

Defining the Stick Figure:
A stick Figure is the simplification of a real person, animal or thing into lines, shapes and dots.

Basically the stick figure can be traced with just lines and circles. Yet you may use other shapes and element to create a variety of characters, or to make it easier for you the construction of stick figures according to your abilities. Now, in order to achieve the best image representation, we will see each structure of the stick figure, that is, the head and the body separately

The chart you see below presents different ways to build up your stick figure. The simplest Stick

Figure is model A; but you may adopt model B, model C, or model D, because there are not restricted rules in creating these figures. Remember, most of these drawing are done FREEHAND, unless you prepare your material beforehand. What counts is the message or idea you want to project to your students. At the same time invite your students to feel free to graphically express or illustrate their ideas.

Giving the Stick Figure Action and Characterization:
In giving action and personality to your stick figures, you must consider these particular points:
  1. Exaggerate the action.
  2. Include facial expression in simple lines to stress the situation.
  3. Consider just the outstanding details regarding professions, sports, nationalities and so on. The following pages include just a few samples of stick figures performing some of these features.
Characterization like:

As you have observed above, with just a few lines and some dots you can achieve almost all kinds of Basic expressions. Not too much details is required. Watch your image in a mirror and let you face picture different emotions by playing with your eyebrows, eyes and mouth. With just these elements you can illustrate short contents. Check the following image below.

We are going to see how to use stick figures in the elaboration of flash cards, posters, and other teaching materials.
Now you are ready to prepare charts, posters, flash cards, Power Point presentations, and so on with Stick Figures. Of course, you need to prepare a Lesson Plan beforehand. We have included some sample to help you organize your new lessons. On the other hand, you can ask your students to prepare their material with stick figures for a particular class. You can prepare material for grammar, vocabulary, short conversations and stories, and many other resources.
